COMETS BOYS CC WINS BACK-TO-BACK STATE CC TITLES

The 2022 Mason Boys Cross Country team finished their fine season with their second consecutive state championship at Fortres Obetz on Saturday. The Comets cemented their name as one of the all-time great cross country programs in the history of the OHSAA. It is their fourth state championship also claiming state titles in 2008, 2014 and 2021.

The Mason boys join Hudson (2017/2018), St. Xavier (2012/2013), and Lasalle (2003/2004) as Division 1 boys teams that have won consecutive CC titles in the last 20+ years. Mason boys have not lost to a team from Ohio in the past two years and finishes the 2022 season as the undisputed #1 team in Ohio.

This years title for the boys was won with grit and determination. The tean did not have their best day, but they certainly had enough. The Comets (128 points) built a huge lead and held on as rival, runner-up St. Xavier (142 points) was closing fast.

Junior Max Liao earned a place on the podium with an all-Ohio performance in 18th place. He was followed by Senior James Mroczka who closed hard to finish 32nd. Junior Brendan Roe ran a superb race as third man.

The Comets exhibited their depth by having the best 4th, 5th and 6th men in the state in Junior Jerry Xu, Senior Aidan Markich and Senior Braeden Fedders.

While Senior Isaac Schachleiter struggled on the day, it is clear the Comets would not have pulled off the victory without his season-long leadership.

The male Comets shared the podium with their female counterparts as the girls won their third state championship in program history. The 2002 Hilliard Davidson HS CC program is the only other modern era division 1 program that has earned victories in both the boys and girls state championship in the same year.

It was a great and magical day to be a Comet!

CONGRATULATION TO ALL THE ATHLETES, THEIR FAMILIES AND COACHES ON ANOTHER "SEASON TO REMEMBER".

8/20 OHSAA Preview at Fortress Obetz 1st

This weekend at the first OHSAA "Pre Season Meet" the team competed on the State Course at Fortress Obetz to test out their legs and the course before the regular season gets rolling. It was a great event and the Comet girls were able to come out on top with a first place finish.

Nearly every good team shows up to make sure they are familiar with the state course and it did not disappoint.  The course was in good shape, and the fields were huge.  There were over 400 people in the girls varsity race, with over 40 teams represented.  The team looked great, and ran with great pride and determination.

The girls started off fast as there is a distinct pinch point after 400 meters.  They got to the "pinch" well and our top 5 settled into the top 30 spots of this massive race. Newcomer freshman, Efa Paschka got to the front and went toe-to-toe with the best girls in the state, including 2 former state champions.  She battled with them for a long time, before she faded a bit, but was still able to take 5th place overall, just behind a few great group of runners. Bella Teply, coming off a great summer of swimming, started her XC training a few weeks ago, and became our 2nd runner and placed in the top 10 of this strong field, and looked great!  She got out well, and just kept plugging to lay down a great time and place.  Grace McKay picked up where she left off last year, and led our pack to a solid time and place.  She was "steady eddie" and just kept chipping away at the field to place in the top 20 overall.  Addison Stephens and Carlie Condit rounded out our two final scorers, and did quite well.  Tessa Palmer and Abby Slife also ran well, and were able to place in front of many team's scorers as they completed our group of top 7 runners.

The team was able to hold off a very strong Hilliard Davidson team, along with several other great teams to take the overall victory by just a few points.  It was a great win, and our first win at this meet in a number of years.

Next up, Mason girls cross country competes at the Moeller Invite on Friday, Aug. 26th.

8/26 @ Moeller Invite

Last night the Mason Girls CC team competed under the lights at the Moeller Invitational.  The team looked good in the JV race, and that is always a good harbinger for the varsity team.  The Comet varsity was the overall champions! The team had a low score of 30 on the night which was great.  The team looked strong and had a lot of nice performances including Ava Orlando, Dafne Lopez, Sharanya Nair and Andrea Berkebile. Efa Paschka took the win overall, with Bella just two spots back.

The varsity girls lined up and took off from the gun.  Bella Teply led the team through the first 1000 meters and she was ripping it.  By the 1 mile mark, Efa Paschka took over and would not relinquish the lead.

Grace McKay took a spill and still ran well, taking 4th place overall.  There was a pack of 4 or 5 girls from other teams, but Carlie Condit battled them well, and was able to break them up to take 8th overall.

Our 5th and final scorer on the night was Avery Legault.  Avery had a tough race in week #1 and bounced back well to help the team secure the overall team victory.

The girls continue to improve, and are looking forward to a great fall.  They'll compete next Saturday at the Loveland Invite.

9/3 @ Loveland Invite

The Loveland Invite scheduled for this past Saturday, 9/3 was cancelled due to extreme weather issues. No makeup.

This coming Saturday, Sept. 9th is the annual Mason Invitational at Corwin Nixon Park. A field of outstanding teams will be represented and promises to be a highlight of the season. More details concering the event to follow.

9/10 Mason Invitational

The Mason Girls CC team had a great day at their own invitational this past weekend. The ladies beat a very strong Dupont Manual team from KY, and lots of other teams too.  Mason's B team also did well, placing 6th overall in a huge field.

Efa Pakscka continues to do well, taking 5th overall, Bella Teply was not too far back with Grace McKay just behind her.  Addi Stephens and Carlie Condit rounded out our 4th and 5th scorers to save the day against a charging Dupont Manaul team.

The Comets also had solid efforts out of Avery Legault and Tessa Palmer, both of whom held off the mass of humanity behind them.  Sharanya Nair, Ava Orlando and Dafne Lopez also ran well, and are coming along nicely.

In the JV race - Sophia Goldschmidt (Goldy) did great!  She ran away from the field and took the overall win!  Gracie Hicks and Winnie Brown did well also, and were not far behind.

Next up for Mason Girls is the Milford Invite on Saturday, Sept. 17th.

9/17 @ Trinity and Milford Invite 1st   This past Saturday the Mason Girls CC team split their forces and went to two different varsity meets.

The Comets top runners went to the Trinity invitational in Louisville and ran quite well. The girls had all five of their scorers in the top 25, including Efa Paschka who ran to a season best 18:09!!
Efa was then followed by Grace McKay and Bella Teply, both of whom were in the top 15.  Addison Stephens and Carlie Condit rounded out the two final scoring runners, with Ava Orlando and Avery Legault not far behind.

The team was able to win the meet overall with a low score of 62 over some of the best competition in Kentucky and Indiana.

Mason's B team traveled to the Milford Invite and took the win there as well.  The team members were led at Milford by Sharanya Nair and Andrea Berkebile, both of whom raced quite well.  It was a great weekend for the Comets and we could not be more proud of their efforts.

Mason CC teams will travel to Culver Indiana next week to compete in the prestigious Culver Military Academy Invitational.

9/24 @ Culver Invite 1st

The Mason Girls XC team continued their winning ways this past Saturday, by taking home the first-place trophy from the Culver Invitational.  This is the 6th straight invitational win for the Comets and they are looking stronger each week.

The Comets were once again led by freshman Efa Paschka who took 6th place overall, and she was followed by Grace McKay, Addi Stephens, Bella Tepley and Carlie Condit.

Grace  McKay had an especially nice race, as she placed just 25 seconds back from Efa, and is really coming on as a legitimate front-runner.

Ava Orlando and Avery Legault also had nice races, and are closing the gap to the first 5 scorers.

The team scored just 47 points en route to a decisive victory and continue to look strong.

In the JV race, the girls took the victory as well, with a near sweep of the first 10 places, and young Molly McKay leading the charge.

Overall, it was a good weekend with great performances from many runners and a continuing run of success.

The Comet varsity will compete at the Nike Valley event at the prestigious course in Terre Haute, Indiana this coming Saturday, 10/1.

9/24 @ Princeton Invite at Landmark Church
10/1 @ Nike Valley at Terre Haute, IN

This past weekend the Comets took their A squad to Terre Haute Indiana for a big national caliber race against the best teams in the midwest.  They took on some top 50 teams in the nation and did well.  The Comets placed third (just 8 points out of 2nd) in this strong field of runners at the famed Lavenre Gibson cross country course.

The team was led by Efa Paschka who ran to a near PR of 18:12.  After Efa was senior Grace McKay, who continues to impress with a new best time, and a great overall place.  Bella Teply was next with Addi Stephens and Carlie Condit close behind.  We had 5 girls under 19:00 minutes for the first time in several years, and they looked great in the process.  Avery Legault also had a nice race, as did Tessa Palmer, Abby Slife and Dafne Lopez.  This field was loaded with talent, and the girls did not back down at all.  They went toe-to-toe with loaded Indiana, Missouri, and Illinois teams filled with speedsters, and fared very well.

Back home again in Ohio, the team also did well at Centerville as well.  Mason ran their "B" team of runners against a strong field at the circus that is the Centerville - Saturday Night Lights, and took 1st overall in the Varsity Race.

This race was comprised of smaller schools, and many local teams like Seton, McAuley, Anderson, Walnut, Talawanda etc, and the team held their own and raced well.

The team was led by Sharanya Nair, who is really coming into her own, and followed closely behind by Nadia Markich and Naina Kaur.

Overall it was a great weekend for the Comets, and the coaching staff could not be more proud of their collective efforts.  They are really coming along well as a team, and looking forward to the postseason.  It should be fun!

Next up Mason Girls CC will seek their third consecutive conference title and 11th overall at the GMC Championships, Saturday, Oct. 15th at Voice of America Park.

10/1 @ Kings Duals
10/15 GMC at VOA

Mason Girls CC took another win at the GMC Championships at VOA last Saturay.  It was a good battle with West and Oak Hills, but the Comets came out on top! Mason scored only 33 points at the league meet, besting 2nd place finisher Lakota West (54) by 21 points. Oak Hills was third with 64 points.

Efa Paschka was the big winner today with a season best time and the fastest time for a Mason runner in XC history!  Efa sat on the West girl's hip for 4500 meters and pulled away in the closing meters to win by a few seconds.  She looked strong and tough!

Grace McKay continues to impress with a new season best time and a great effort in 4th place overall, with Bella Teply and Addi Stephens not far behind.

Carlie Condit was coming back from a short respite and she worked hard to secure our 5th and final scoring spot as Avery Legault faltered somewhat from a recent sinus infection.  Sharanya Nair also worked hard to finish out our final slot in the varsity race.

Five girls were named 1st Team all GMC with Avery and Sharanya being named to the 2nd team.  The team looked solid and logged our 2nd fastest team average very en route to a 20+ point victory.

We also had great races in the OPEN race with Abby Slife and Tessa Palmler taking the 1st two spots with very strong times.

Next it is on to Districts where the Comets will face Oak Hills again, along with Ursula and Ursuline.  It should be good fun, so come out to root them on!

The OHSAA District Championships are Saturday, 10/22 at VOA. The Comet girls will be seeking to win their 4th consecutive District Title and 15th overall since the 2004 season.
10/22 District at VOA 1st

This past Saturday at the District meet at VOA was a great day to be a COMET!!!   The girl's Cross Country team took home another district title (15th overall) and looked strong in the process.

Efa Paschka cruised to a district title, and looked smooth and strong.  (17:58)  Grace McKay ran to a 2nd place finish and then we had 3 girls come in not long after her.  Addi Stephens in a new PR, followed by Carlie Condit and Bella Teply.  Abby Slife had a nice day as did Tessa Palmer.

The girls scored just 22 points on the day, which is their 2nd lowest point total at a districts meet.  The team was in front of Oak Hills and St. Ursula in Mason's section of the district, and would have comfortably won the other district as well.

The team heads to Troy this Saturday to race in the Regional meet @ 3:45pm.  Mason Girls finished 3rd last year to Loveland and Beavercreek and will be seeking their program's 7th overall Regional title. The ladies will be seeking to qualify for state for the 18th time in the past 19 years.

At the district open race over at Loveland later that day the girls went 1-2-3 with Nadia Markich taking the win!  Sharanya, Molly, Varsha and Alexa rounded out our final scorers and looked strong in the process (even some with one shoe).   Overall, it was a great day with lots of season best times and strong efforts.

10/29 Regional at Troy 1st

This past weekend, for the first time in 8 years, the Mason Comets Girls XC team won a Regional title!  The Comets have now won 8 regional titles in the last 20 years, with 2014 being the last time the Comets were atop the podium.

Mason girls CC has now qualified to the state meet 18 times in the past 19 years.

The team was led by Efa Paschka, who took the individual win on the day at regionals. Efa sat smartly on a pack of talented runners, and then made a strong move at the 2 mile to pull away for the win.

Grace McKay had a stellar effort with a top 10 finish on a hot and hard day.  Grace ran smartly in the pack and chipped away at those in front of her, moving up nicely to a 7th place finish.

After Grace were Bella Teply and Addi Stephens, both of whom were in the top 20 medal spots. They battled a large group of girls in the final mile to secure their spots.

Mason's final scorer was Carlie Condit, who fought hard to 26th place finish.  She was on the ropes a few times and looked discouraged, but she rallied and finished hard to make it happen for the team.

Avery Legault and Abby Slife came in not long after Carlie, and all entered the history books as Regional Champions and State Qualifiers.

It was so great to see the girls rejoice in the victory after all of the hard work this season. This is a great group of young ladies, and the Mason CC coaches could not be more proud of them.  Even our alternates were great, Tessa Palmer and Nadia Markich; they were so supportive and ready to go!

A special thank you to all of the runners who came up to watch, and cheer.  Parents, coaches, teachers, friends, family and alums were all present cheering on the Comets!   It was truly a special day.

Mason Girls Cross Coutnry will be seeking their third state title at Fortress Obetz, Ohio this coming Saturday. The Comets won back-to-back state championships in the 2012 and 2013 seasons. Last season the ladies finished 8th overall at state.

Mason Girls CC Wins Third State CC Title!

On a windy, warm, Saturday in early November, the Mason Girls' Cross Country team captured their 3rd state title, and 5th trip to the podium at the State Cross Country Meet at Fortress Obetz.  The Comet girls also won back-to-back CC titles in 2012 and 2013.

On this day the ladies were in an all out war with the Hilliard Davidson Wildcats who came to fight, and it took everything the Comets had to win another state championship.

The team came through the first mile mark with a solid lead, but the HD girls were closing in fast.  During the 2nd mile the girls held their position and looked primed for the win.  However, in the third mile the Comets faltered a bit, and HD was once again closing fast!

Thanks to some very tough running, the Mason XC girls were able to hold off the charging Wildcats and survive for a close victory.  The results were slow to trickle in, but it was soon clear the Comets would take the day scoring just 75 points to HD's 91 points.

Mason was led by freshman standout Efa Paschka.  Efa went big and ran with defending state 2 mile champ Katie Clute, but after 2 miles this began to hurt.  Efa fell back a few spots, but held on for 6th place.

Grace McKay ran a nearly perfect race, and just chipped away at the competition moving up nicely all the way into 8th place.

After Grace, there was a small gap, but the amazing trio of Bella Teply, Carlie Condit and Addi Stephens all finished within 2 seconds of each other that secured the win!

Bella got out very strong and faded some, but ran tough in mile 2 and 3 to secure her spot. Meanwhile Carlie and Addi ran hip-to-hip to help each other along, and ran lights out to help the team take the top spot on the podium.  Avery Legault and Abby Slife also ran tough and did their part by getting out hard, and battling to the last minute with everything they had.

"We could not be more proud of these young ladies, they are so tough," said Mason head coach Chip Dobson. "They worked so hard this year. Thanks to the parents, fans and administration that were all in attendance.  The girls put on a great show for them, and we are so thankful for their support!"

Mason Girls CC joined the Mason Boys CC team as only the 2nd school to win both titles in the same year since Hilliard Davidson did it in the 2002 season.

Mason Football won their 4th game in a row on Friday, defeating visiting Middletown 10-7 in a defensive battle. The Comets were able hold off the Middies after losing their starting QB and tailback early in the contest.

Middletown got on the board first after a Comet fumble recovery was returned for a TD. That would be all the Middie scoring on the evening though as the Comet defense held Middletown to just 92 total yards on the night.

In the 2nd quarter, backup QB Quinten Kaylor rushed for 10 yards to tie the game and that's how it stood at the half (7-7).

Mason had other chances in the game but couldn't get a consistent drive into the end zone. At the 4:20 mark in the 3rd quarter, Colson Bunch kicked a 32-yard field goal to put Mason in front. The defense took over from there.

Christian Printup recorded 10 tackes (7 solo) and 2 sacks to lead the defense. Ronan Casanova had 8 solo tackles as well.

Next up, the Comets (4-1) go on the road this Friday to Lakota East. The Thunderhawks defeated Hamilton last week 21-7. The all-time series between the two schools is in favor of the Hawks at 11-8 since they first played each other in 2001. The Comets will be seeking to avenge last seasons 33-27 loss.

9/23 @ East won 21-6 5-1 5-0

Mason Football kept their GMC record unblemished at 5-0 this past Friday as they took care of business at Lakota East. Final score; 21-6. The Comets got off to a sluggish start in the contest only able to notch a single score by halftime (7-0). They were able to tally TD's in the thrid and fourth quarter, while the defense held the Hawks to 6 points in the final few mintues of the game. See scoring summary below:

MAS TD 02:38 Quinten Kaylor 4 YD RUN (Colson Bunch KICK) 7 0

Mason QB Quinten Kaylor was 11/17 for 168 yards and one TD, also rushing for two more scores. Shelvon Hibbet had 9 carries for 45 yards and a TD.

Mason will visit top rated Lakota West this coming Friday for a matchup of GMC unbeatens. The Firebirds blasted Hamilton last week 38-0.

9/30 @ West lost 38-7 5-2 5-1

Mason Football dropped their first league contest of the year at Lakota West last Friday by a final score of 37-7. The game was much closer than the final score indicates as the Comets held off the #3 ranked Firebirds most of the first half.

The Comets had limited every opponent to single digits in scoring and were, like the Firebirds, 5-0 in the Greater Miami Conference going into Friday’s matchup at Lakota West. Mason trailed by three, 10-7 at the half. Six minutes into the third quarter the score remained the same until a fumbled handoff and a pick 6 resulted in quick West scores.

Junior linebacker Kai Woolfork got Mason into position for its only touchdown late in the 2nd quarter with an interception at Lakota West’s 30-yard line. Senior Nicholas Sailers converted with a one-yard run.

The Mason defense notched 5 sacks of the West quarterback. Shelvon Hibbet rushed for 87 yards on 22 carries for the Comet offense.

Mason (5-2, 5-1) will host winless Sycamore (0-7, 0-6) this Friday for Homecoming Night. The Aves fell to Lakota East 21-0 last week.

10/7 Sycamore won 38-13   6-1

Mason Football defeated Sycamore 38-13 on Homecoming Night at Atrium Stadium. The victory keeps the Comets tied for 2nd with Princeton at 6-1 in the GMC.

After a sluggish start, the scoring heated up in the 2nd quarter, going to half at 14-10 Comets. The Mason defense rised to the occasion in the last two quarters, holding the Aves to just 3 points to win the Battle of Sky for another season.

Mason QB Larson Brown finished with 8/15 passing and 1 TD. Nick Sailers rushed for 138 yards on 15 carries and an amazing 4 touchdowns, the longest being a 67-yarder in the final quarter. See the scoring summary below.

Next up, Mason (5-3, 6-1) will have their hands full as they host Fairfield this Friday. The Indians lost in double-overtime to Lakota West last week, 38-31. This week Mason football is ranked as the #8 team in the playoff race.

10/14 Fairfield won   6-3 7-1

Mason Football sent their GMC record to 7-1 overall with a big win at home last Friday versus Fairfield. Final score 30-7. The margin of the final score was certainly notable as the Comets handed the Indians their worst loss of the season.

The contest was close at the half with Mason holding a 10-7 advantage. The 2nd half saw the Comets put up 17 unanswered points, while the defense pitched a shutout in the final two quarters.

Running back Nick Sailers had a big night, rushing for 154 yards on 24 carries and 3 touchdowns with a game-changing 57-yard jaunt in the 2nd quarter. Colson Branch kicked 3 field goals of 24, 40 and 18 yards to add important scores in the game. Larson Brown was 6/15 passing for 72 yards to 5 different Comet receivers.

Mason (6-3, 7-1) will play its final regular season game this Friday at Princeton. The game will be a battle for 2nd place in the GMC. The Vikings defeated Sycamore last week 42-7. The Comets will expect to move up in the postseason playoff rankings this week. Mason was #8 last week with the update being announced today. The top 16 teams in the SW region will earn a playoff berth with the top 8 teams securing home field advantage for the first round.

The Comets have already secured a playoff berth for the 8th consecutive season with final seeding announcements this Sunday, 10/26.  Mason is currently the 7th-ranked team in Region 4.

10/21 @ Princeton won 10-7 7-3 8-1

The battle for 2nd place in the GMC was won by the Mason last Friday night with a tough 10-7 win over Princeton. The Comets held on against a talented Vikings team that had an identical league record of 7-1 coming into the game. The first half was a complete defensive struggle as neither team was able to score.

Mason got a 43-yard field goal from Colson Bunch with 4:51 left in the third quarter to finally break thru the scoring drought. At 8:04 in the final quarter, Larson Brown plunged into the end zone on a 1-yard run to put Mason in the lead 10-0.

Princeton who was hampered by 16 penalities on the night, got a TD at the 6:52 mark in the fourth quarter (10-7). Mason was able to grind out the final minutes of the game to solidify them as the 2022 GMC runnerup to Lakota West.

Nick Sailers led Mason the ground with 58 yards on 25 carries. Larson Brown finished 10/20 for 83 yards.

Mason Football secures their 8th consecutive postseason berth as the #5 seed. They'll host Colerain this coming Friday night for a first round matchup. Last week Colerain fell to Lakota West 31-14. Earlier this season, Mason defeated the Cardinals 32-6.

The winner of Friday's game will advance to the 2nd round versus either Springboro (4 seed) or Oak Hills (13 seed) on November 4th at the higher seeded team location.

PLAYOFF

vs. Colerain

7:00 @ Mason

won 14-7

9-2

8-1

For the 2nd time this season, the Mason Football team has defeated the Colerain Cardinals. This past Friday's game though was much more difficult than their earlier season 32-6 victory and with much more on the line. The Comets were able to rally from a 7-0 first half deficit to advance to the next round of the playoffs with a 14-7 win. After being outgained 111-55 in the first half, Mason found momentum with two unanswered scores to up their record to 9-2.

The win was especially satisfying for the Mason FB program after being eliminated from the playoffs by the Cardinals in 2017 and 2020.

On 4th and 7 from the 34-yard line with 4:20 left in the third, Mason quarterback Larson Brown found wide receiver Colin Billhorn with some separation and completed the touchdown pass. Colson Bunch's extra point tied the game.

The go-ahead score came from running back Shelvon Hibbet's 12-yard run with 7:59 remaining in the fourth quarter to give Mason a 14-7 lead. The Comet defense took over from there. Colerain would have some chances afterward, but Mason's Weston Simmons intercepted a Cardinals' pass with 1:13 remaining to effectively end the game with another postseason win for Mason.

Hibbet led the Mason rushers with 81 yards with Brown going 7-for-19 through the air for 103 yards and the score to Billhorn.

The game's start was delayed as three Colerain buses transporting players were in a wreck en route to Mason. The hour delay caused both teams to be sluggish out of the gate. Colerain punted on its first two possessions and Mason fumbled its first opportunity.

Mason (9-2)is at nine wins for the first time in five years. They play Springboro next Friday in a 2nd round matchup. The Panthers defeated Oak Hills 42-10 Friday night to advance. The two teams last played in the 2019 season opener with Springboro winning 31-7.

Mason and Springboro clashed in a 1st round playoff game back in 2015 with the Panthers winning 42-21. The Comets will be seeking to advance past the 2nd round of the playoffs and post double-digits wins this Friday at Springboro. Kick-off is slated for 7:00 pm.

The winner of Friday's contest will advance to the Regional Semi-Finals on Nov. 18th vs. either #1 Moeller or St. Xavier at a neutral site.

2ND ROUND PLAYOFF

vs. Springboro

@ Springboro

won 29-26 10-2 8-1

Mason Earns First Trip to the "Sweet Sixteen"!

To coin a familar sports phrase, Mason Football "grabbed victory from the jaws of defeat" last Friday at Springboro in the 2nd round of the OHSAA playoffs. The Comets exhilerating 29-26 come-from-behind 29-26 victory sends them to the Regional Semi-Finals (sweet 16) for the first time in the programs D1 history.

The Comets found themselves down two scores (26-14) with just 5:54 remaining in the contest. But Mason wasn't ready for their season to be done and proceeded to produce one of their most prolific come-backs in the history of their program.

Mason quarter back, Larson Brown, was able to connect with teammate Chase Blevins on a 40-yard TD pass with 4 minutes remaining. The Comet defense then rose to the occasion as the Panthers sought to run out the clock with Mason having only 1 timeout remaining. Mason's "D" did their job and forced Springboro to punt to the Comets.

Mason, down 26-21, with less than 2 minutes remaining, and one timeout, would have to start on their own 2 yard line, need to get into the Springboro endzone, if their 2022 season would be extended.

"The Victory Drive"...and that's just what they did! The Mason offense executed methodically down the filed in the closing seconds of the game, with Larson finding Braden Greer down the middle on a 37-yard pass to send the Mason crowd into hysteria. Nick Sailers rushed the Comets into the endzone for a 2-point conversion to send Mason into a 29-26 lead with 50 seconds remainng.

The Panthers, with no timeouts, and needing a field goal, would run out of game as the Comets rejoiced, sending themselves to the 3rd round of the postseason against #1 Moeller.

The Panthers took an early 6-0 lead, but Mason responded in the 1st quarter with a Braden Greer 3-yard pass from Larson and extra point by Colson Bunch, to give the Comets a 7-6 advantage. Springboro got a TD in the 2nd quarter to go up 12-7 at the half.

The only scoring in the third was a Nck Sailers interception for a 50 yard "pick-six", stunning the Panther home crowd and giving Mason a 14-12 lead heading to the fourth.

Springboro rebounded with consecutive touchdown in the fourth giving them what they thought would be an insurmountable advantage....then the Mason heroics began.

Larson had a huge game throwing for 244 yards. Braden Greer and Quinn Brown also had big receiving games with 73 and 46 yards, respectively. Nick Sailers rushed for 60 yards on 10 carries.

Jacied Deaton, Sailers, Sean Krueckeberg all had interceptions. Caden Davis made 11 tackles and had 2.5 sacks. Jake Bates notched 10 big tackles on the night. Kai Woolfollk (3) and Weston Simmons (4) got in on the QB sacking as well.

Mason (10-2) produces 10 wins in a season for the first time since joing Division 1. The Comets will play in the Regional Sem-Finals vs. #1 seed Moeller this coming Friday, 11/11 at Middletowns Barnitz Stadium. The Crusaders (11-1) defeated St. Xavier 28-7 last week to advance.

Mason has played the Crusaders twice in the regular season since 2007, losing 24-7 on 8/24/07 and 17-14 on 9/11/16.

Friday's winner will play either Lakota West or Elder in the Regional Final on Friday, 11/18.

11/11 Regional Semi-Finals lost 24-16 10-3 8-1

The Mason Football team's record breaking season came to a close this past Friday at the Regional Semi-Finals of the OHSAA Playoffs. The Comets had advance to the D1 Sweet 16 for the first time in program history after winning two postseason contests versus Colerain and Springboro. Friday's 24-16 loss to Moeller didn't dampen the Comets outstanding season that saw them post a 10-3 overall record and streak to an 8-1 second place finish in the GMC.

After falling behind 21-0 to the Crusaders after two quarters. Mason came out of half time focused on getting back in the game. The contest appeared to be a runaway after a Moeller field goal (24-0).

As they had done all season, Mason didn't stop fighting and the game turned out close, thanks to a pair of late scores from the Comets. Larson Brown's second 15 yard touchdown pass to Braden Greer and a Nick Sailers two-point conversion, put the Comets one score away from tying the game with just over three minutes to go. Braden Greer had caught another TD pass earlier in the 4th quarter to get Mason on the board (24-8).

Mason's 2nd onside kick was recovered by the Crusaders as Moeller was able to run off the rest of the clock to advance in the post season.

Senior Larson Brown was 10-for-22 for 119 yards with the two late scores to Greer. Sailers had 46 rushing yards. It was the first meeting between Mason and Moeller since the regular season of 2016.

Mason can hold their heads high knowing they were one of only 16 division 1 teams still playing in mid-November. Congratulations to all the Mason players and coaches on an outstanding 2022 season.

Beavercreek

won 1-0 1-0 0-0

Mason Boys Soccer had a great opening match last Friday, 8/12 earning a 1-0 win against a visiting strong Beavercreek team. The lone goal came from Erik Winterhalter and assisted by Kellan Ren.

It was the first shutout of the season for goalkeeper Zach Cochran.   Their were 12 total shots (8 on goal). The Comets defense showed a dominant performance for their season opener.

After only having 3 training sessions between team selections and Beavercreek the coaching staff was proud of the energy and competitiveness on display and are excited about the potential of this group as they looked to improve each and every day.

The next match is this Saturday (8/20) as the Comets travel to Columbus to take on the 2021 Regional Finalist,  New Albany Eagles.

8/20 @ New Albany @ 6:00

Cancelled due to weather

Next up, Mason boys soccer will play an away game at Moeller on Saturday, Aug. 27th.

8/27 @ Moeller @ 5:00 tied 0-0 1-0-1 0-0

Two of the top teams in the Cincy area battled on the pitch this past Saturday. Mason visited Moeller and the pair battled to a 0-0 tie. It was a great early non-contest test for the Mason Boys. Coming into the game with Moeller (#1) and Mason (#2) in the city there was a lot of excitement and energy from both teams plus a great crowd (1200-1500 fans).

This was a fun match for all to see, an open back-and-forth game. The Mason Comets had several good opportunities for a goal, one coming about 15 min into the game where Luke Brogan found Brian Gorksi in behind which caught the Moeller off his line and Gorksi was unfortunate to hit the post. A very similar chance came in the second half where Marcos Neto found Gorksi again to beat the GK but several Moeller defenders swarmed and we hit the post again. Also, later in the second half off of a long throw by Grady Johnson Marcos Neto scored a goal that was called back due to a foul on the GK.

The coaching staff was very proud of the intensity, grit, and fight of all the boys.  We felt we were dominant in each phase of the game but lacked clinical execution. The emotion of the game forced us to play rushed times and not always find the solutions we looking for but none this less a great test for us this early in the season. Finished the game with a total of 8 total shouts and another shutout credited to Zach Cochran and the defense!
